LNG is the liquid form of the same clean and safe
natural gas people use in their homes for heating, cooling and cooking. Natural
gas
is also a primary source of fuel for many U.S. industries and for the generation
of electricity. To convert natural gas into a liquid form, the gas is super-chilled
to minus 260 degrees Fahrenheit. At this very cold temperature, the gas becomes
a liquid, occupying about 600 times less space. This allows the LNG to be pumped
into specially designed ships and transported to terminals where it is
converted back into natural gas and fed into pipelines that serve industrial,
commercial and residential markets.
