To help meet the growing demand for natural gas in the United States and to provide a safe, reliable, long-term, competitive source of energy, Golden Pass LNG Terminal LLC and Golden Pass Pipeline LP are developing a Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) receiving terminal located near Sabine Pass, Texas and an associated pipeline connecting to the existing U.S. pipeline infrastructure.

Golden Pass LNG LLC, the owner of the Golden Pass LNG Terminal, is expected to be 70 percent owned by an affiliate of Qatar Petroleum, with affiliates of ExxonMobil and ConocoPhillips each owning a share in the balance of the interest in the terminal.  It is also expected that LNG for the Golden Pass terminal will be supplied primarily from the Ras Laffan 3 and the Qatargas 3 projects in Qatar, which will produce and process natural gas from Qatar's offshore North Field.

Sabine Pass, Texas is an excellent site for an LNG receiving terminal because it is located along one of a few deepwater ports along the Gulf Coast suitable for importing LNG. The region also has an existing pipeline infrastructure with access to South East Texas and U.S. markets. Furthermore, this pipeline infrastructure is capable of handling the quantity of  natural gas that this proposed project will bring to the area.

Golden Pass LNG Terminal LLC and Golden Pass Pipeline LP submitted a National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) pre-filing request on November 19, 2003 to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission's Office of Energy Projects, which began the first step of the permitting process for the Golden Pass LNG project.  In July/August 2004, the Golden Pass LNG project filed formal applications for the LNG terminal and natural gas pipeline project with the FERC. On June 3, 2005, the staff of the FERC issued the Final Environmental Impact Statement for the project.  On July 6, 2005, the FERC approved the Golden Pass LNG project and issued the "Order Granting Authorization Under Section 3 of the Natural Gas Act and Issuing Certificates."  The Golden Pass LNG Terminal has also received all other major federal and state permits.

On August 1, 2006, Golden Pass LNG Terminal LLC announced that it had awarded a lump-sum turnkey contract to Chicago Bridge and Iron Company NV (CB&I) to build the Golden Pass LNG terminal.  CB&I's work scope includes the engineering, procurement and construction of facilities with the capacity to process 15.6 million metric tons per year (MTA) of LNG, which is equivalent to approximately 2 billion cubic feet of natural gas a day.  The scope of the project includes the construction of two ship unloading berths, five full containment storage tanks, vaporization facilities and gas send-out and ship unloading systems.

As used throughout this web site, the term "Golden Pass" shall refer to Golden Pass LNG Terminal LLC and Golden Pass Pipeline LP.
